Evacuation ordered for Zones A, B; shelters open at noon

A mandatory evacuation has been ordered for Zones A and B, plus any mobile homes or buildings countywide that cannot withstand hurricane-force winds.

A mandatory evacuation is a legal order to all people in impacted areas, directing them to leave those locales and seek shelter elsewhere.

Officials also are urging all residents in Coast cities and rural areas to consider evacuating, either to the east or northeast.

Shelters opening at noon

Storm shelters in Biloxi and throughout Harrison County will open at noon today instead of the previously announced 4 p.m. opening.

The two shelters in Biloxi are at Biloxi Junior HIgh School on Father Ryan Avenue and North Bay Elementary off Popp’s Ferry Road.

You’ll find a complete list of shelters throughout Harrison County on the city web site.

Boat owners have limited time to pass bridges

Tenders at the Popp’s Ferry Bridge in west Biloxi are reminding boat owners that the bridge’s span will not open for marina traffic once sustained winds reach 34 mph.

The bridge is continuing to operate on its pre-storm schedule, raising its draw for marine traffic at the top and bottom of each hour.

The Cedar Lake Bridge is closed to marine traffic.
