Woolmarket library to reopen Thursday

The Woolmarket branch of the Harrison County Library System will re-open Thursday in its new location.

The library has completed its move into a larger facility and will re-open Thursday at 9 a.m. at the Woolmarket City Center, 13034 Kayleigh Cove Drive.

“Staff are very excited to have almost twice the space in the new location,” Harrison County Library System Director Sarah Crisler-Rusky said.  “They have worked hard to serve the community in the old location but the new space has a better layout.”

The 2000-square foot space on the north side of the Center will allow the branch to increase its children’s collection and accommodate a more comfortable area for patrons to read or use computers.

“The Biloxi Friends of the Library is donating funds to purchase some of the furnishings needed to expand these spaces,” Crisler-Rusky said. “We have also received a grant funded through the Institute of Museum and Library Services to allow the library to purchase several Chromebook laptops for the Woolmarket and Saucier branches.”

The move from a small trailer to the Center was a project led by the city and Harrison County to allow the library more space to accommodate its growing collection and enhanced services and programs.

Biloxi Cemetery Tour receives Heritage Award

In recognition for preserving Biloxi’s history, the Mississippi Heritage Trust has awarded the Old Biloxi Cemetery Tour with a 2018 Heritage Award for Preservation Education.

For more than a decade, the Biloxi Historic Cemetery Tour has welcomed thousands of visitors to Biloxi’s historic cemetery for tours of re-enactors telling the history of those laid to rest in the cemetery.

“This award validates what we are trying to do and supports what we are doing,” Biloxi Historical Administration Bill Raymond said.  “These tours allow us to preserve history in a different way”.

The Historic Cemetery Tour is held annually in the fall with free, self-guided tours. The tour is produced each year by “Preserve Biloxi,” a group that includes the City of Biloxi, Biloxi Bay Chamber, Biloxi Main Street, Biloxi Public Schools, the Genealogy and Local History Department of the Biloxi Public Library, and the University of Southern Mississippi.
