It’s the first Friday of the month, which means the area of Rue Magnolia and Water Street in downtown Biloxi will be buzzing with live entertainment, an art gallery reception and local vendors.
It’s all part of Main Street’s First Friday, which takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. Many of the downtown restaurants will offer special events and some offer free hors d’oeuvres and beverages.
Colin & Chase, an Ocean Springs musical duo, will perform outside the Magnolia Hotel, which is also home to the Mardi Gras Museum.
Meantime, the country music group Little Big Town performs at the Great Lawn at Harrah’s this evening at 8. Tickets range from $25 to $130. Larry The Cable Guy has two shows at the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino, and country music legend Charlie Daniels is at the IP Casino Resort Saturday.

Shuckers eliminated from post-season play
It’s official. The Biloxi Shuckers, who wrapped up their MGM Park schedule earlier this week, won’t make the playoffs.
The team is in the midst of a five-game series in Mobile and despite besting the BayBears in the opener Thursday night, eliminating Mobile from playoff contention, also found themselves eliminated from post-season play after Jacksonville upended Pensacola.
The losses by Mobile and Pensacola also gave Jacksonville the South Division’s second half title.
Biloxi’s Double A baseball team, an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, finished their home season an even 35-35. The Shuckers will start the 2018 season just one win shy of 100 regular season victories at MGM Park.
The Mobile series continues tonight, with the first pitch from Hank Aaron Stadium at 7:05 p.m. Live coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on Cruisin’ WGCM AM-1240 and FM-100.9, as well as on the Shuckers Radio Network. The game will also be available at biloxishuckers.com, MiLB.TV and TuneIn Radio.

Walk, run and climb to remember the fallen of 9/11
Organizers have opened registration for the third annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run/Walk & Climb, an event that helps remember firefighter Stephen Siller and his FDNY brothers who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
The run, a nationwide effort, is named in honor of a New York Firefighter Stephen Siller who in full gear, ran from the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center where he lost his life while saving others.
The event takes place on Saturday, Sept. 16 beginning at 6 p.m. at Fort Maurepas in Ocean Springs where runners and walkers will make their way across the Biloxi Bay Bridge to the finish line at the Margaritaville Resort in Biloxi.
“It looks like it’s going to be bigger and better than last year,” Biloxi Firefighter and event coordinator Justin Lopez said. “With the addition of a stair climb, and more after party festivities on Margaritaville’s pool deck, this event is going to be awesome.”

Calling all one-kick wonders to Hiller Park
Want a fun way to help out the revitalization of Hiller Park? Well, the Parks & Recreation Department has a kickin’ good way you can do that.
Registrations are now being accepted for teams for the department’s Annual Hiller Park Revitalization Kickball Tournament.
The tournament will take place Saturday, Sept. 30 at the Barbara Ferrill Softball Fields, 1940 Edgers Road with two games played by each team. Teams are to be made up of 9 to 13 players ages 14 and older and each must include at least three female players.
“It is exciting to be able to hold this event for the fourth year,” Parks & Recreation Director Cheryl Bell said. ” This fun, competitive friendly tournament is a great way to participate in a community event that benefits Hiller Park. Plus, teams will get a chance to win money and trophies.”
A trophy and $200 will be awarded to the first place team, and the second and third place team will receive a trophy. The fee is $100 per team and registration is weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Hiller Park Office, 380 Hiller Drive. Registration ends Friday, Sept. 22.
The City of Biloxi, along with the Friends of Hiller Park is hosting the tournament, and all money raised will go to the park revitalization efforts.

News and notes: Council preview, budget, podcasting
Council meeting: The Biloxi City Council meets twice on Tuesday. During a 3 p.m. meeting, Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich will discuss the city’s employee compensation schedule, and at a 6 p.m. meeting councilmembers face an agenda of more than two dozen measures. Budget talks: The proposed budgets for the Biloxi Police and Fire departments were the focus of a budget workshop that took place earlier this week at City Hall. Hula hoop for the heart:The Parks & Recreation Department will hold Hoops for Hearts, a fundraiser benefiting the American Heart Association, on Saturday, Sept. 9 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Point Cadet Pavilion. Seafood festival: The Biloxi Chamber of Commerce will host the 36th Annual Biloxi Seafood Festival on the Biloxi Town Green on Saturday, Sept. 9 and Sunday, Sept. 10. Pool Party:To celebrate the new school year, the Biloxi Aquatics Division will host a free Back to School Pool Party at the Biloxi Natatorium on Friday, Sept. 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is free and hot dogs, chips and drinks will be available. Participants must have appropriate swimsuits; boys must have a drawstring and liner and children under of age of 10 who cannot swim must be accompanied by an adult in the pool.
