A host of public agencies, emergency relief agencies, businesses and utilities will be involved in this evening’s “R U Ready?” storm-preparedness gathering at the Donal M. Snyder Sr. Community Center, but Coast Electric’s presentation stands to be electrifying.
The member-owned electric cooperative, which serves Biloxi homes and businesses north of the Bay of Biloxi, will have an actual demonstration to show power lines, transformers, breakers and all of the other devices that help electricity get from the power plant, to your street and eventually to your home. The free “R U Ready?” session runs from 5 to 7:30 p.m.
“It’s an educational presentation that gives great insight into the safety features built into our system and helps members understand the power restoration process,ā€¯ says Melissa Russo of Coast Electric. “Providing reliable electricity is what we do, but doing it in a safe manner, for our team members and the public, is paramount. Tonight, visitors to ‘R U Ready’ will also learn vital information about generator safety and our electrical equipment in a live demonstration.ā€¯
During “R U Ready,” booths will be set up throughout the Snyder center, offering information on shelter locations, evacuation routes, flood insurance, transportation, pet safety, telephone safety checks, fire safety, hurricane prep kits, boat safety and evacuations, electrical safety, recovery clean up, and more.
Refreshments will also be available during the event.

National Day of Prayer is Thursday at noon
Biloxi will mark National Day of Prayer with a multi-denominational observance Thursday at noon at Biloxi City Hall.
The hour-long ceremony, organized by Carleen E. Hall, is scheduled to take place on the front steps of City Hall.
The event, themed “Pray for America. Unity,” is free and open to the public.
Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich will present a proclamation in honor of the occasion, and a host of local clergy and others will take part in the program.

Preservation series begins Thursday evening
Preservation in May, the community’s annual month-long salute to Biloxi’s colorful past, kicks off Thursday with a mini-tour of the northern section of the Biloxi cemetery.
The Northside Cemetery Tour will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Old Biloxi Cemetery, north of Irish Hill Drive and the CSX railway, where three African-American families will be highlighted.
“This is the first time for us to venture to the north side of the cemetery for a tour,” Biloxi Historical Administrator Bill Raymond said. “Logistically, it’s easier for a smaller tour to be held in that area and there are stories that need to be told.”
Re-enactors will portray the Clay, Dossett and Ellis families and will tell the stories of their connections to Biloxi. Cookies and refreshments will be served and Passports to History will be given out.
The Preservation series picks up each Thursday with the re-telling of a significant event in Biloxi’s history or a visit to an area of historical significance. On Monday, May 21, the Biloxi Preservation Awards will be presented at the Dukate Building on Father Ryan Avenue. This event was originally scheduled for Tuesday, May 22 but has been changed because of school graduation. Each event is free.
