A permit with a construction value of $3 million has been issued for the Saltgrass, an upscale steakhouse planned for the northeastern corner of Myrtle Street and U.S. 90 on Point Cadet.
The permit was one of 74 building permits issued last week by the city’s Community Development Department. In addition, the department is overseeing the construction of three beachfront hotels and a host of other construction sites. (To see pictures of progress, click here.)
The Saltgrass, which will be elevated, is billed as a “Texas to the Bone” brand and is owned by Golden Nugget parent firm Landry’s. It will be 9,500-square feet structure, with space for more than 300 patrons, including a covered patio. Construction is expected to begin this week.
Also last week: The Biloxi Fire Department received 136 calls for service, including 92 medical and three fires; the Biloxi Police Department handled 2,468 call for service; and the Engineering Department added to its growing volume of work.

First-responders called to second hydraulic spill
Sections of Popp’s Ferry and Atkinson roads were closed for several hours today as first responders worked to clean up a hydraulic spill from a garbage truck, the second such spill in two working days.
A Waste Pro truck left a swath of hydraulic fluid from the western end of Atkinson Road and north toward the Popp’s Ferry Bridge around noon today. Emergency workers closed off about a mile of roadway overall – a section of Atkinson west of Popp’s Ferry Road and the northbound lane of Popp’s Ferry Road toward the Popp’s Ferry bridge – whilecrews from the Biloxi Public Works Department and Waste Pro worked to clean up the nearly 70 gallons of fluid.
Biloxi Police and firefighters help re-route traffic around the oily trail while workers applied a material to soak up the spill.
Monitoring the clean up were the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality and the Harrison County Utility Authority, which has a contract for residential garbage, trash and recycling with Waste Pro through the end of this month.
The northbound lane of Popp’s Ferry Road was re-opened around 3:45 this afternoon, but the cleanup continued on Atkinson Road.
A Waste Pro truck was involved in a similar spill on Friday on Travia Avenue, off U.S. 90. Public Works crews barricaded the roadway, which was cleaned and reopened several hours later.
