Temperatures are expected to climb to the ’40s this afternoon, and local emergency managers hope property owners will use the time to make sure their property, especially exposed water pipes, are property insulated before sundown, when a hard freeze is expected.
The coldest temperatures – as low as 22 degrees with a wind chill possibly dropping temperatures into single digits – are expected again this evening and into Wednesday morning. In fact the cold temperatures are forecast to continue for the remainder of the week.
“We’re asking people to remember the three Ps,” said Chief Administrative Officer Mike Leonard said. “If you haven’t done so already, protect your plants, your pets and your pipes. Act now. Any outdoor pipes should be wrapped, and allowed to drip slowly, if possible. Check on the elderly, make sure they are OK. Homes with space heaters should remember the warnings in using these appliances.”
Protecting pipes or allowing a slow drop from faucets will help diminish the chance of pipes bursting from freezing water. Added Leonard: “Protecting pipes is the responsibility of property owners. The city cannot perform any work on private property. Take action now, to avoid having to make costly repairs. ”

The week that was: Last week the Biloxi Fire Department responded to 139 calls, including 92 for medical emergencies and three for fires, and the Police Department handled 2,180 calls for service. Elsewhere last week, the Community Development Department issued 21 permits for a total construction valuation of $631,000, and the Engineering Department continued to progress on projects throughout the city. City Council meeting: Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich this evening will be asking the Biloxi City Council to seek legislative approval for a proposal to create a tourism-friendly atmosphere and oyster aquaculture center on vacant land near Point Cadet Marina. Christmas tree recycling: The Harrison County Beautification Commission has set up a recycling station in Biloxi at the Rodenburg Avenue and U.S. 90 parking bay. The drop-off location will be available through Jan. 19. Please remember to remove all decorations, lights and stands before dropping off a tree.
