HOURS: 24 Hour Shift On-Duty/48 Hour Off-Duty

PAY GRADE: $40,093.00

REQUISITION: 2024003

GENERAL PURPOSE:  To participate in classroom and practical training in the performance of a wide variety of technical tasks in support of the fire prevention and suppression, medical emergency and hazardous materials handling functions; to learn the operation and maintenance of a variety of fire and rescue apparatus and equipment; and to participate in fire prevention and station and equipment maintenance activities.

This is the entry level/recruit classification. This class is distinguished from Firefighter II by the primary assignment to training activities and by the performance of the most routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within this classification. Employees in this class typically work under immediate supervision and are trained such that they meet the State of Mississippi Minimum Standards for Firefighter. Since this class is a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.

CIVIL SERVICE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Individual MUST be a minimum of 18 years of age; have a high school diploma or GED equivalent; be eligible to work in the United States; a registered voter of the county in which he/she resides; have and maintain a valid driver’s license and MUST be insurable by the City’s insurance company.
