Downpour leads to street flooding, flash flood warning

This morning’s heavy downpour has caused street flooding in low-lying areas of Biloxi and the National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning until 9:30 a.m. for the area and southwestern Jackson County.

“We’re asking people to please turn around when you encountered a street with standing water,” said Biloxi Emergency Manager Michelle Crowley. “It’s just not worth the risk to try to drive through a flooded area.”

Standing water was reported on Richard Drive, from Cedar Lake to Indian Drive, where parents, students and school bus drivers were able to make their way onto the campus of the new Biloxi Junior High School and nearby Biloxi High School. In fact, today is the first day of school for all Biloxi public schools.

The following streets are reported as flooded at 8:30 this morning:

Porter, north of Division; intersections of Baywood and Rustwood, Crawford and Howard,  Keller and U.S. 90, Bellman and U.S. 90, Porter and Division and Ravenwood and Baywood.

Also reported as flooded are the 760 block of Whitney Drive, Ellington Drive, Oak Street north of U.S. 90, Bohn from the CSX railway to Division, and the 1600 block of Popp’s Ferry Road.
