Enjoy the weather you’re experiencing today and Saturday because a blast of arctic air and sub-freezing temperatures will arrive Sunday night to usher in the New Year.
The blast of cold air is expected to move into Biloxi Sunday night through Monday morning with the coldest temperatures – as low as 23 degrees – expected Monday night and Tuesday morning, and again Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. In fact, the National Weather Service says, you can expect colder-than-usual temperatures for most of next week.
As a result of the frigid forecast, two cold weather shelters will be opening. The Salvation Army Cold Weather Shelter, 2019 22nd St., Gulfport opens Sunday at 4 p.m., and the Fournier Multi-Purpose Building, 10395 Automall Parkway Blvd. in D’Iberville opens today at 5 p.m. Anyone needing a ride to a shelter should call the Biloxi Police Department at 228-392-0641.

‘Blues over Biloxi’ airshow coming in July
Soaring high-speed maneuvers from jets operating inches apart will fill the skies off east beach this summer when the vaunted Blue Angels headline the “Blues over Biloxi” Air Show July 21-22, Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich announced this afternoon.
“It’s been too long since we’ve had the excitement of an air show on the Coast, and we’re honored that the Blue Angels will be here to punctuate another summer of family fun in Biloxi,” Gilich said at a news conference at the Biloxi Visitors Center.
Representing the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels at the news conference were Lt. Andre Webb and Lt. Dave Steppe. Webb, who joined the Blue Angels in September, is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and has logged more than 2,100 flight hours and 200 carrier arrested landings. Steppe is an Auburn graduate who joined the Blue Angels in 2016. He has more than 1,400 flight hours and more than 300 carrier arrested landings.
The two-day July show will be centered off the beachfront near the Great Lawn between Harrah’s and Margaritaville.
“We expect huge crowds both days,” Gilich added. “It’s the perfect location for viewing aerial acrobatics over the water.”
Along with the Blue Angels, the show will feature all the popular performances spectators have come to expect from a large regional air show including the world famous Aeroshell Aerobatic Team, the US Army’s Golden Knights Parachute Team, the USAF F-16 Viper Demo Team, ACEMAKER Airshows T-33, a number of aerobatic solo performers, warbird flyovers, Coast Guard rescue demos, and a host of modern military aircraft.

New tour, film to help Biloxi share rich history
The city will be unveiling two new tools – a driving and bicycling guide, and a new History of Biloxi film – to help usher in the New Year in historic fashion.
The Essence of Biloxi Driving and Bicycling Trail is a self-guided tour through Biloxi’s long history, richly diverse cultures and unique environment. The tour, which is divided into east and west routes, begins at the Biloxi Visitors Center.At the same time, the Biloxi Visitors Center in mid-January will be premiering a new 11-minute film on the history of Biloxi. The film, which will play in the visitors center theater every 15-minutes, highlights moments and events in Biloxi history beginning in the 1540s with the Spanish conquistadors and continuing through today.

About garbage, trash and recycling: Remember that pickup schedules are one day later than usual this week and next week because of the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. Also, a reminder from the Harrison County Utility Authority regarding Christmas leftovers and curb service: “If it is wrapping paper, boxes, or anything that is not food-related, trash contractor Pelican Waste will pick it up at the curb. Pelican cannot pick up any household food waste, and it must be placed in the Team Waste garbage cart.”
Holidays: Non-emergency municipal offices in Biloxi will be closed Monday in observance of the New Year’s Day holiday.
