Record-setting BEST takes second in state meet

Biloxi Elite Swim Team swimmers, known as BEST, finished second overall and set nearly two dozen team records at the Mississippi Swimming Short Course State Championships.

“BEST came extremely close to winning their first state championship,” said City of Biloxi Recreation Superintendent and BEST Head Coach Jamie Lee.  “This meet was really special to us, not only because we were so close at winning a state championship, but because it was in our own backyard.”

More than 300 swimmers from nearly a dozen cities throughout the state competed Feb. 16-18 at the Biloxi Natatorium. Mississippi Makos from Jackson place first, Biloxi Elite Swim Team placed second, Sunkist from Jackson placed third, Shockwave from Tupelo, Oxford and Starkville placed forth, and Performance Elite from Jackson placed fifth. 

Overall BEST swimmers set 21 team records, earned 31 gold medals, 27 silver and 33 bronze and have eight swimmers that will compete in the sectionals meet March. 

Among the awards winners are Naomi Smith, 10 and Under girls high point runner-up award; Gibson Williams, 10 and Under boys high point runner-up award; Savanha Grimsley, 11-12 girls high point award; Blanka Prikasky, 11-12 girls high point runner-up award; and Gabrielle Ivey, 13-14 girls high point award

Swimmers to compete in the sectionals meets are Evan Guichard at Cary, N.C, March 8 through 11 and  Gabrielle Ivey, Savanha Grimsley, Audrey Chang, Lee Tao, Natalie Gordon, Lola Ivey, and Naomi Smith at Atlanta, Ga., March 15 through 18.
