Tunnel-to-Towers race begins and ends at Margaritaville

Margaritaville Resort in Biloxi is going to be the starting and finishing point for the second annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run and Walk, an event that helps provide funding for the organization of New York firefighters who have delivered Christmas gifts to the Mississippi Gulf Coast annually since Hurricane Katrina.

The run, in its second year on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, is a nationwide effort that benefits the Stephen Siller foundation, named in honor of a New York firefighter who, in full firefighter gear, ran from the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center where he perished in the collapse of the World Trade Center.

“This is a great cause for so many reasons, and we’re hoping we’ll see a great turnout, in terms of participation and supporters,” said Cono Caranna of Margaritaville. “We’ve sort of changed it up a little. We’ll have a pre-race event here on that Saturday, Sept. 17, with the Blackwater Brass Band, and then Coast Transit will bus runners and walkers to Fort Maurepas in Ocean Springs.

“They’ll make the walk or run back to Margaritaville, where the Blackwater Brass Band will lead a secondline up the pool deck. It’ll be $5 admission to the party, but all proceeds are benefiting the fund.”

Added Caranna:  “And to cap it all off, we’re going to have a spectacular seven-minute fireworks show that is going to harken back to those pre-Katrina days when you saw fireworks on a regular basis down here on the Point.”
