Police, fire plan community festival for Saturday

Far too often the only encounters that residents have with Biloxi Police or Fire departments involve an auto accident, a fire or some other sort of emergency, but a free community festival this weekend is designed to give the public a chance to meet public safety workers in a fun atmosphere.

The fifth annual Biloxi Community Festival Against Crime takes place Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Town Green.

Visitors will have a chance to spend the afternoon learning about the police and fire departments, seeing their high-tech equipment, and learning how to avoid becoming a victim of crime and preventing fires in the home.

The event will feature games and activities for families, public safety displays and demonstrations, music, door prizes and free food.

Gulfport team highlights Biloxi Fireman’s Day parade

It’s true, says Biloxi Fire Chief Joe Boney, it was the Biloxi Fireman’s Day parade on Saturday but the real stars of the day were the members of the Gulfport Fire Department Pipes and Drums team.
“Without a doubt,” Boney said, “that was a nice surprise for us. They said they wanted to perform, and we’d never seen them, but the crowd at the fire museum loved them.”

The team, with bagpipe and drums, was among the couple dozen fire trucks that rolled through the streets of downtown Biloxi Saturday morning in a parade that ended with a gathering at West End Hose Co. No. 3, the city’s fire museum.

“I think it all went very well,” Boney said. “We didn’t have as many people as we would have liked along the route, but the turnout at the museum was great, and we were pleased to have a good representation from fire departments along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

“Those guys from Gulfport were great, though,” Boney said, adding with a smile: “We want them back next year to mark our 125th year, even though they’re from Gulfport!”
