Point Cadet Marina restoration to begin next week

A $7.3 million project to restore Point Cadet Marina is expected to begin next week.

The 270-day project will include replacing electrical and water lines and piers that were decimated by Hurricane Katrina, and dredging the marina to depths of up to 9 feet.

“Point Cadet Marina was about 20 percent damaged after the storm,” said Port Division Manager Frankie Duggan. “The most significant damage, though, was to the utilities. That’s the major work on this project.”

Duggan said the marina will not close during the work, but boats may have to be shuffled to accommodate contractors.

The marina has about 180 vessels at the moment, short of its 284 capacity.

“We had some boats that didn’t come back,” Duggan said, “and we’ve opted not to use all slips until the construction is complete.”

Meantime, he said the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor, which has been closed since Hurricane Katrina and was re-damaged by Hurricane Gustav, is still several weeks away from opening. “We’re hoping to be able to get some boats in the harbor in three weeks or so,” Duggan said, “but we still have some work to do along the outer wall.”
