The Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art is seeking volunteers for its upcoming multi-media baseball exhibit.
“Our Love Affair with Baseball,” which spotlights Biloxi’s and the Gulf Coast’s long and colorful relationship with amateur and Major League baseball, opens May 10 and through Nov. 4. The exhibit will be open Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“This is a great opportunity for local baseball fans to share their knowledge with visitors and be a part of something very special, entertaining and educational,” said Kevin O’Brien, executive director of the Ohr-O’Keefe. “You don’t have to be a baseball fan, just a fan of our community. We’ll give you the information on the exhibit, and you’ll tell the story of our Gulf Coast and our enduring love affair with our national past-time.”
The exhibit, with guest curator and former major leaguer Barry Lyons of Biloxi. will feature exhibits on the Biloxi Shuckers’ inaugural season, the six World Series rings owned by Biloxi major league baseball scout Lee “Peter Roy” Elder, a documentary on the Negro team the Biloxi Dodgers, an exhibition on the days “When the road to the World Series began in Biloxi,” and a spotlight on the area’s Major League and collegiate all-stars. A Friday lunchtime speaker series will feature a host of local and well-known major leaguers.
Volunteers will serve as greeters in the galleries, providing visitors information on the elements of the exhibit and the community itself.
The museum expects 50,000 people to see the exhibit over its six-month run, based on the huge success of last year’s “Katrina +10” exhibit, which attracted 40,000 visitors.
Volunteers, who will be briefed on the exhibit. must be dependable, punctual and possess good customer skills. Volunteers may also bring a book, magazine or homework to the galleries, must be mindful of incoming guests.
