Oak Street paving set to begin Friday

Great news for businesses and residents on Oak Street: Workers with Oscar Renda Contracting are hoping to have all of Oak Street north of the CSX Railway paved in the next several days.

Contractors are preparing the surface for paving today and Thursday, and plan to begin applying asphalt on Friday. The work is expected to be completed in two to three days.

“This is certainly great progress for those who live on Oak Street,” said Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich. “This particular site at Oak Street required contractors to install a huge sewer line 23-feet below ground, which is one of the deepest cuts they have to make in this entire project. The instability and moisture of the soil required special safety measures be taken to avoid cave-ins. And the rainfall that we’ve seen in the past several weeks and months exacerbated the situation of working 23 feet below ground, but the big story is that we are days away from permanent asphalt going down.”
