Initial layer of asphalt scheduled for Caillavet, Howard

Good news for those who travel Caillavet Street: A base layer of asphalt is expected on the section of Caillavet south of Howard Avenue by the first part of October, and the lane of Howard Avenue just east of Caillavet should be paved by mid-October.

The majority of the Caillavet and Howard work has involved underground utilities to serve MGM Park, while a major city infrastructure project, being done ahead of MGM Park work, impacted the south end of the roadway, creating a dirt roadway on a thoroughfare that had handled as many as 9,500 vehicles on an average day before the work began.

“What we have had here are two major projects intersecting: the underground utility work associated with MGM Park, and, at the south end of Caillavet Street, a major water and sewer line that will run all the way to DeBuys Road,” said Biloxi Chief Administrative Officer David Nichols. “We promised to keep the roadway open through this work, such as it is, and now contractors have assured us that all of the impacted areas will have an initial layer of asphalt as soon as the first part of October and all done no later than mid-October.”

One note of caution: While the initial paving on Caillavet and Howard is expected to be complete in mid-October, the final layer of paving for Caillavet Street will not occur until early 2015, when the majority of large construction material deliveries to the stadium are complete.

Contractors also reported today that underground utility work for both the stadium project and the FEMA infrastructure repairs have now been completed along Caillavet Street, and concrete curbs have been installed to set the stage for roadwork to continue.

The paving contractor, Warren Paving, plans to finalize road grading by this time next week, and, weather permitting, have the initial asphalt base installed for Caillavet Street by the first part of October.  Once the initial paving on Caillavet is finished, the intersection of Caillavet and Howard, along with the sections of Howard just west of Caillavet will have all paving work completed.
