Holloway to nominate Arlene Wall for west Biloxi council seat

Mayor A.J. Holloway confirmed this afternoon that he intends to nominate Arlene Wall to serve the five and a half months remaining on the City Council term of her late husband, Tom.

Holloway had approached Arlene Wall last week, days after the five-term councilmember from west Biloxi died.

“She initially said that she wanted to think about it,” the mayor said, “and I understand that. I think she’ll do a great job, and I know Tom will be guiding her from above.”

Since less than six months remain on the term, state statute calls for the mayor to recommend a candidate to be confirmed by the Biloxi City Council. Holloway’s announcement was met with applause during the meeting this afternoon.

The mayor announced his intention after several councilmembers eulogized Wall at the outset of the meeting. Councilmember Clark Griffith, Wall’s fellow Keesler retiree on the council, noted that Wall had been a mainstay for him on the council. Added Griffith, as he held up a framed photo of Wall, “and he’s here today.”
