First Lady, Excel by 5 help create ‘Super Savers’

You’re never too young to learn about saving money, and Biloxi Excel by 5 and First Lady Deborah Bryant will help youngsters get in the spirit on Thursday morning with a program called “I am a Super Saver.”

The free program, which is open to children up to age 5, will begin at 10 a.m. in the auditorium at Lopez School, 140 St. John Ave. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Mrs. Bryant  will read the award-winning children’s book “Corduroy,” which tells the story of a young girl who uses money from her piggy bank to buy a teddy bear named, you guessed it, Corduroy.

Children also will receive a free copy of “Corduroy” autographed by the First Lady, as well as a themed snack, and a chance to decorate a piggy bank.

“Corduroy,” by the way, is a 1968 children’s book written and illustrated by Don Freeman, and published by Viking Press. In a 2007 online poll, the National Education Association named the book one of its “Teachers’ Top 100 Books for Children.” It was one of the “Top 100 Picture Books” of all time in a 2012 poll by School Library Journal.

“I am a Super Saver” is being sponsored by Biloxi Excel By 5, Biloxi Schools, City of Biloxi, IP Casino Resort Spa, Community Bank, Blom’s Creative Signs and S&S Trophies and Awards.
