RESOLUTION NAMING NEW FIRE STATION
IN HONOR OF TWO FORMER CHIEFS IN THE BILOXI FIRE DEPARTMENT
THE BARTHES-SENTELL FIRE STATION
WHEREAS, on March 17, 2005, the City of Biloxi will formally dedicate a new fire station that has been constructed on Oaklawn Drive; and
WHEREAS, this station, also recognized by the Biloxi Fire Department as Station No. 9, will serve the Woolmarket and Eagle Point communities; and
WHEREAS, it would be appropriate to also name this station in honor of the contributions of two revered former Biloxi fire chiefs, Fredrick August “Gus” Barthes and Charles Sentell; and
WHEREAS, “Gus” Barthes was the first city-appointed fire chief, with prior chiefs having been elected by volunteer fire companies, and Chief Barthes served as fire chief for 27 years of his 43-year career, until his retirement from the Biloxi Fire Department on October 1, 1933; and
WHEREAS, Charles Sentell served as fire chief from October 1, 1933 until his retirement August 1, 1942, and his overall career with the Biloxi Fire Department spanned a total of 34 years and seven months; and
WHEREAS, Chiefs Barthes and Sentell dedicated their lives to serving the citizens of Biloxi and both had careers that began with service in the volunteer hose companies that predated the Biloxi Fire Department; and
WHEREAS, the city had previously honored the two men by naming a former station in their honor; and
WHEREAS, it would be proper and appropriate to name the new fire station on Oaklawn Drive as the “Barthes-Sentell Fire Station.”
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BILOXI, MISSISSIPPI, THAT:
SECTION ONE: The findings, conclusions, and statements of fact contained in the foregoing prean1ble are hereby adopted, ratified and incorporated herein.
SECTION TWO: The new fire station on Oaklawn Drive shall henceforth be named, identified, and known as the Barthes-Sentell Fire Station, as well as Station No. 9, and the Mayor and/or Director of the Fire Department are hereby authorized to post appropriate signs of identification.
