Annexation will be the central issue Tuesday for three Biloxi City Council meetings.
On Tuesday afternoon, members of the City Council plan to re-consider their 4-3 vote two months ago to pursue growing the city’s northeastern boundary by 12 square miles, but only after Mayor A.J. Holloway and city staffers make a morning presentation outlining the city’s progress on providing city services in the Woolmarket area, which became part of the city in mid-1999.
The morning meetings begin at 10 a.m., and the council’s afternoon meeting begins at 1:30 p.m. All meetings will be at City Hall.
The pending annexation issue proposes that Biloxi introduce municipal-level services to an area that runs several miles to the north of the city and meets the existing borders of Jackson County and D’Iberville on the east. Some councilmembers, however, have questioned the status of Biloxi’s delivery of services, particularly water and sewer, to the Woolmarket area, a 34-square-mile area that became part of the city in mid-1999.
City to provide funding for social-service agencies
The City Council will be voting on doling out nearly three quarters of a million dollars to nearly two dozen social-service agencies during its meeting on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.
The approvals of $724,500 in funding are among the 53 measures on the agenda for the council meeting.
Other issues on the agenda include approval of an overlay district for east Biloxi, which would prompt more commercial growth; a measure that would halt city efforts to have property owners remove dormant slabs from their property; and several other zoning issues.
Biggest recipients in the nearly two dozen agencies receiving social-service funding from the city: $120,000 for the Gulf Coast Women’s Center for Nonviolence; $80,000 for Coastal Family Health Center; $70,000 for Moore Community House; and $68,000 for Catholic Social Services.
